Windows XP SP3 and Microsoft HD Audio UAA Problems (Update 3)

. Friday, March 7, 2008

Sometime ago I had an issue with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3  and I quickly found out none of HD audio/modem devices where recognized even after installation of proper drivers.
I’ve tried few different solutions, until I found this entry in some Chinese forums (thanks Google for translations, and sorry forgot the source). To make Windows see these devices (Audio device on High Definition audio bus) follow step below:

the steps:
Download this software : kb888111xp2.exe
Open Regedit and go to :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows

Find CSDVersion Key
Legend:

100 (hex) means its SP1
200 (hex) means its SP2
300 (hex) means its SP3

Change CSDVersion from 300 to 200 and Restart
Install kb888111xp2.exe (Microsoft UAA Patch)
Change CSDVersion back to 300.
Restart
Install device drivers
Enjoy :)

Tested and Worked for : Realtek HD, Audio Devices HD, Onboard AMD(ATI) x1250 video and modem Windows XP drivers.

Update 1:
Apparently Microsoft forgot in include UAA support in SP3 driver database.
Besides solution above you might want to try this: User Modified kb888111 patch fixed for Service Pack 3 .

Update2:
There are also issue with Day Light Savings patch - NOT INTEGRATED IN patches database AS WELL ...

Update3:
Websense Security thinks my website is Malicious and my best guess is because one of links I gave for kb888111xp2 patch was pointing to Rapid-share, which I guess makes my site assumed automatically to be malicious by Websense…

I tried to convince them multiple times, but I guess convincing doesn’t work as they are assigned me with “Malicious” label yet again.

As Alternative mirror you can download the file below. Extract it to temp folder and inside under MSHDQFE\Win2K_XP\us you’ll have it.

Thanks!!! You are a god! In case other people are looking for this, it fixed my HP laptop with Conexant HD Audio. Got the patch from Hydrogen Audio: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=47079

I checked the registry and 200 is already set. I too have a Conexant HD Audio device on an HP. I've contacted HP and they want me to reinstall.

I've also tried removing the KB888111 patch by running the SP uninstall string and deleting the registry key. I'm not sure what else to do to make this thing work

I have an uncompressed folder & files, but no set up program. How do you initiate the installation of the patch?

Frankly i didn't tested user modified KB888111 for the SP3, but I assume right click on hdaudio.inf and choose "Install" should do the trick or otherwise follow the reg modifying method - its proven - works!

Thank you.

This fixed my audio problem on my Lenovo. Can hear the sounds from my system now. However, I just found out now that the microphone does not work.

When I receive a call or test sound from Skype, Mic is being muted and i have no idea how it happened. I just know it is muted because while my volume control is open, the Muted checkbox under Mic properties suddenly is ticked.

When i record audio through some software like Audacity, Mic also turns to be muted automatically so it does not record anything.

When I open Realtek HD Audio Manager from systray, it shows from Audio I/O tab, microphone is like disabled or disconnected marked by a red dot (instead of green for output).

Can't find the solution to this yet. Hope you could help. Thanks in advance.

and

also keep in mind to have latest Realtek Drivers installed.

kris said...

thanks for the quick response. I forgot that being red or pink tells where mic should be connected. Pink/red for input. Green for output. LOL.

I will look into the links you have sent. :)

kris said...

My bad. I'm really laughing at my mistakes here.

The simple solution is to turn on Microphone or Audio input from Mixer Tab of Realtek HD Audio Manager. Hmmm... Weird that it is muted by default.

Good lord!

I can hear sounds now.. but there's still 1 thing...

Under device manager > other devices, there's still a big yellow "?" over Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus... What can seem to be the problem? I've arleady installed the Realtek drivers.. but now this.. any tips/info for it?

BoredSysAdmin said...

Right click on "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" device -> Properties->Details

Hi BSA, I came across this post while searching for a way to get my sound card to work. This isn't exactly my problem (in fact I tried the fix, with no luck), but you seem like you might know enough to help me out.

I reinstalled XP with a slipstreamed SP3 disk, and downloaded all the necessary drivers from Dell, based on my service tag number. Everything installed fine, except my sound card, which isn't even detected by Windows. However, in the boot diagnostics, my speakers work fine, so I'm certain it's a software problem, and more specifically a windows problem.

Device Manager shows that Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio is present, and installing the drivers from Dell adds a SigmaTel High Definition Audio Codec, and a couple of hidden Creative drivers... nothing which suggests an actual device though. Most importantly, it does NOT detect any unknown (question-marked) devices which might be a sound card.

The soundcard detected in the BIOS setup is a SigmaTel 9200.

At this point, I've officially run out of ideas. I've tried installing a number of different drivers... Conexant, Realtek, Intel, based on different suggestions I've found on the web, as well as played with the order of installation of the Sigmatel and Creative drivers in relation to each other and to the chipset drivers from Dell.

I understand if you don't care to do tech support for me, but at this point my remaining solution is to buy an external soundcard, so I figure I might as well ask. I'll gladly provide any additional info you might need.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunately, my PnP SD Emulator driver is installed and working, and that second link focuses mostly on Vista, but thanks for replying anyway. It sounds like there are a ton of problems with Sigmatel drivers... in all my searching, I must have seen a couple dozen unique problems; unfortunately mine seems to be the most unique, as I have only found one other post with the exact same symptoms.

If I had known how much time I'd be investing in trying to fix this thing, I would have just bought a new card right away...

But audio device disappears after reboot. I have to restart UAA bus at every boot with help of .bat
devcon.exe restart "PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_30F4103C&REV_03"

I've chose KB888111 with registry editing for more modern driver version

BoredSysAdmin said...

@Max,
Both hotfixes you gave link to not relevant for SP3, and registry edit is only needed for sp3.
KB888111 is limited distribution hot fix and it is NOT provided by MS support site, only by 3rd party vendors.
My solution doesn't require complicated workarounds like manually forcing UAA device to restart.

Hi, I will get sound using either kb835221 or kb888111xpsp2 with Chinese reg edit of service pack version id.

BUT after restart the drivers have disappeared... The UAA installs...The hardware is found and I can install the idt HD inf file. After restart it is all gone and I have to do it again. I have a HP DV4. That HP driver you posted for another module will not work. Yellow exclamation mark. I have downloaded a similar service pack intended for my model dv4-1248tx - "sp41616". This can only be installed after having reinstalled kb888111xpsp2. But it will also disappear after restart.

BSA - I still have the problem here and I've spent ~15 hrs (even with Dell Support) trying to fix this.

I have a Dell Vostro running XP, SP3. with an integrated Realtek HD Audio Driver.

Out of the blue I couldn't hear audio. Every device I have is enabled and working properly, including the Realtek High Definition Audio under "Sounds..." and the "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver..." under System Devices. FYI, the UAA driver version is 5.10.0.5010. But there is No Audio Device.

It appears that I need to install UAA driver 5.10.0.5013 BEFORE installing the Realtek HD driver in order to hear audio?

I can't seem to get UAA 1.0a to be installed. For instance, through the device manager I uninstall Realtek and Microsoft UAA. Then I try to install UAA 1.0a but it doesn't seem to work? I'm just stuck.

I'm having a problem with just a few files but I can't seem to get this thing straight!

Thanks!

I'd try to uninstall both modem & sound drivers and try to install official drivers first. This post is more design for users of HP machines who want to install XP on pc sold with Vista, since HP dropped supporting XP on newer pc's. Acer official drivers "should" install correctly in your XP sp3

Many thanks for your help as I have now restored the sound. I shall bookmark your blog for future reference.

For the life of me I cannot get my audio to work on my G50-112NR.

In doing this process of getting audio to work for this laptop, has anyone else encountered the laptop asking for TWO drivers for the, "Audio Device on High Definition on Audio Bus"?

If I install the drivers for Realtek HD Audio, I can get one of the two yellow notifications to disappear in the device manger. This does allow audio to work, but as long as I do not close the lid to the laptop. If I try to attempt to comeback from standby, audio stops working unless I restart the system.

Also, upon restarting the system, I will then be prompted again to install a driver for the second "Audio Device on High Definition on Audio Bus".

All my attempts to find something for this additional thing has failed.

I have followed the above instructions as well but with no success in solving these two problems.

Can anyone please help? I am so lost and out of my element on trying to remedy this....

ROOT\MEDIA\0000

what should i do BSA?

pls help me, i've been 2 months without any sound, im about to kill someone hehe

thx

BoredSysAdmin said...

Jose, if you already have Realtek HD audio device, did you tried to install latest drivers from Realtek?

Here

Unknown said...

Hi BSA, yes i did, a thousand of times, in fact i was running out of ideas so i installed sp3 due to my xp had sp2 and i thought that maybe that was why your solution didnt work for me, but its actually the same result, its like the realtek hd doesnt exist. I delete de realtek hd and the microsoft uaa and downgrade from 300 to 200, then i restart and install the uaa patch and switch it to 300 again and restart, and finally i install realtek hd drivers and restart, but windows never recognized the audio card.
The first times i tried your solution it actually worked, and then even that stopped working, at the moment nothing works.
What should i do? i think im the only one in this blog whose laptop is still broken. I really need your asistence BSA, pls HEEEEELP!

thx in advance

Unknown said...

Oh, and i forgot to tell you, when i try to install the realtek hd manually by the ADD HARDWARE option, windows tell me that the driver is installed but will not work properly and gives me a CODE 10 error message. The device manager shows me the realtek hd audio definition with a yellow exclamation mark.

im so god damn lost, i hate this damn laptop!

BoredSysAdmin said...

Hey Jose,
How about drivers from Acer support site? Looks the version is older, but it might actually work for you.
Here

Also Don't try to manually force device drivers - it's never works since very old ISA cards... but it's ancient history...

Unknown said...

BSA thx for your soon reply, I've tried with the acer website drivers and also with the ones on the realtek site, none of them work =(

For the first time since I got this Dell XPS M1330 laptop two years ago, I have audio in Windows XP. All it needed was this silly little Hdaudbus.sys file from your UAAforXPSP3.zip file, and then the drivers that I installed long ago suddenly worked, without even rebooting.

THANK YOU! And thank you for putting it up on Google Sites, because it's the only URL that still worked.

Unknown said...

THANKS!! It worked. I've had on and off issues with audio, and your patch fixed it - nothing else worked.

finally got it to work.. thanks a lot for the tip! saved me a lot of time!!

I had some additional issues as I had a seperate video card (not on board) and the UAA driver was installing for the video card (it's and HDMI card so it has a sound interface too)

- make sure you enable on board sound in BIOS (not as 'auto')
- make sure you have the motherboard chipset drivers installed - there are a few utilities that can help you identify your motherboard

Anonymous said...

Thanks, this worked for me. I also had to download the modem file mdmxsdk.sys. Setup then had an error copying HFXSetup.exe - which I punted on. Didn't seem to be that important (caveat - I don't care about the modem working) and I have sound back for the first time in a long time using the SP2 spoof.

Needed this for my work laptop - all my machines are on Ubuntu :)

Many thanks

sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar! i followed the steps to edit the registry to indicate sp2, used that exact patch, which i downloaded directly from microsoft. THEN installed all my device drivers. worked perfectly!!

a few things worthy of mention that worked for me as well:

1.)instead of installing with the .exe, extract "kb888111xpsp2" with 7zip or the like, open your device manager, and manually point the "pci device" in "system devices" to the "common files" folder created when you extract.

2.)as to the installing device drivers part, go to HP's consumer support forums and search "pavilion dv4 1120" for a great article on the procedure for installing them, and which ones, as a few are for Vista. follow it precisely, as with this blog's instructions!!!&! (my machine is a pavilion dv4 1123us, but this applies to a whole list of similar machines, from HP, Compaq, Acer, etc, with the same components)

3.)i however, did not do the procedure where you set up "devcon.exe" to run in Startup menu, to restart the MS UAA Driver, as i was saving till last.... and once i rebooted after installing the sound drivers, the sound stopped working. i wanted to see if just perhaps leaving the registry set to "sp2" might eliminate that. nope! so..... set the registry back to "sp3" like this blog says.

4.)finally, i decided to try updating the BIOS on the board (i avoided it to begin with because it WAS only for Vista...) anyway.... sp48847 to be exact. it's ONLY available under the driver list for "Vista" on HP's site, but i decided to try it anyway from within XP, and guess what, it worked! whew, and now the friggin sound and everything else works fine after a reboot, with NO "devcon.exe" tweak! so, the choice is yours: do the tweak, or update the BIOS. heck, maybe even try it before you do anything. either way, it will work, and you can finally get some sleep :)

sorry for a long post, and i'm NOT gonna hijack a thread. simply put, this works, and if not, you're missing something in the directions.

Laptop model:Hp pavilion 6700

Thanx man!!! I reinstalled windows and only audio drivers weren't recognized. I already thought I would have to downgrade to SP2 but your solution saved me!

Anonymous said...

Thanks a million. A top solution. On a Win XP Pro (re-)install (SP2) on a Lenovo T60 Thinkpad, normally I would have installed the device drivers first and the problem wouldn't have arisen.

But didn't think and installed MS updates first (incl SP3) without finishing installing all the drivers first. and then found I couldn't install the Audio drivers because the Soundmax driver wanted the KB888111 installed first. And that (MS download was offline so got from Lenovo site) wouldn't install as it thought it wasn't needed.

Tricking it into thinking SP2 was installed worked. We now have sound.

Thanks again.

Hi,

I'm trying already for few days to get the sound from my comp, but unsuccessfully. I tried that with changing CSDVersion key and installing the fix, but it still asks to install uaa drivers first.

I've downloaded that Universal_Audio_Architecture_High_Definition_Audio_AddOn_1.0.zip and UAAforXPSP3.zip but I dont know how to install it.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could explain it to me.

Truly,
Zak

i know these postings have been going for 2+ years, so i hope our SysAdmin is still bored enough to read here. after 2 sleepless nights i am in dire need for help:

>> Download this software : kb888111xp2.exe

the link to it doesnt work, and most other searches lead to rather dubious torrent sites.

but mainly:

>> Regedit ... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows
Find CSDVersion Key

that CSDVersion Key is simply not there !

i thought of simply de-installing SP3, the applying kb888111, but SP3 also doesnt want to leave: whichever method i try, it stops at ''system cannot find the file'' and goes back.

your Update 1, User Modified kb888111 patch fixed for Service Pack 3:

the first two links dont work, and the third gives a ZIP file with three files (inf, PNF and sys) in it, but not the expected EXE file for an update. so what do i do with those 2 files?

please help and guide me into the right direction. from all the answers here, i feel i am close to it, but not quite there yet.

many greetings - henry -

BoredSysAdmin said...

Hey henry66,
Yes, the first link to UAA got expired.
However please read carefully Update 3 section it is still relevant and link is functional as of today.
As regard the CSDVersion Registry key in question - it's has to be there. Please try to look again.

p.s: I usually ignore most of comments and in fact I answer one first time in a year.. I couldn't really ignore such detailed comment.

Recently I found Realtek audio drivers do include this patch and on installation would fix the issue regardless of SP version

this must be my week of doing things wrong: i keep posting an answer to BoredSysAdmins very useful answer, but it either keeps vanishing or does not appear at all. now what am i doing wrong this time? it is not my week ...

Hi,
Great Job.
Your 1st solutions worked for me. Though the 1st two links didn't worked for download of the patch but the 3rd link mentioned in the solution worked for me. I'd checked with Intel people as well, they were also not able to resolve the problem. Though while doing the troubleshooting, I'd understood the problem, but was not sure how to get the solution for SP3 which was already update on my XP system.
Thanks for the Support.
Please keep up the GOOD JOB.

Great blog and many thanks for the XP SP3 fix for the audio system.

Question: I applied the fix on my T60 laptop (XP SP3) about 2 months ago and immediately the laptop saw its S/PDIF port. Wonderful1! I shut the system down in a few days and yesterday set it up again but now that port isn't identified. What do I do? What went wrong?
