Your 1st solutions worked for me. Though the 1st two links didn't worked for download of the patch but the 3rd link mentioned in the solution worked for me. I'd checked with Intel people as well, they were also not able to resolve the problem. Though while doing the troubleshooting, I'd understood the problem, but was not sure how to get the solution for SP3 which was already update on my XP system.

Thanks so much ! I have a Thinkpad T61 running Windowz XP SP3. I was caught in a loop trying to install the HDA audio bus driver that would fail because I was at SP3, then install the soundmax driver which would fail because no HDA driver was found ! Yes, the first link to UAA got expired.
However please read carefully Update 3 section it is still relevant and link is functional as of today.
As regard the CSDVersion Registry key in question - it's has to be there. Please try to look again.

p.s: I usually ignore most of comments and in fact I answer one first time in a year.. I couldn't really ignore such detailed comment.

Recently I found Realtek audio drivers do include this patch and on installation would fix the issue regardless of SP version

i know these postings have been going for 2+ years, so i hope our SysAdmin is still bored enough to read here. after 2 sleepless nights i am in dire need for help:

the link to it doesnt work, and most other searches lead to rather dubious torrent sites.

but mainly:

that CSDVersion Key is simply not there !

i thought of simply de-installing SP3, the applying kb888111, but SP3 also doesnt want to leave: whichever method i try, it stops at ''system cannot find the file'' and goes back.

your Update 1, User Modified kb888111 patch fixed for Service Pack 3:

the first two links dont work, and the third gives a ZIP file with three files (inf, PNF and sys) in it, but not the expected EXE file for an update. so what do i do with those 2 files?

please help and guide me into the right direction. from all the answers here, i feel i am close to it, but not quite there yet.

I'm trying already for few days to get the sound from my comp, but unsuccessfully. I tried that with changing CSDVersion key and installing the fix, but it still asks to install uaa drivers first.

I've downloaded that Universal_Audio_Architecture_High_Definition_Audio_AddOn_1.0.zip and UAAforXPSP3.zip but I dont know how to install it.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could explain it to me.

Thanks a million. A top solution. On a Win XP Pro (re-)install (SP2) on a Lenovo T60 Thinkpad, normally I would have installed the device drivers first and the problem wouldn't have arisen.

But didn't think and installed MS updates first (incl SP3) without finishing installing all the drivers first. and then found I couldn't install the Audio drivers because the Soundmax driver wanted the KB888111 installed first. And that (MS download was offline so got from Lenovo site) wouldn't install as it thought it wasn't needed.

Tricking it into thinking SP2 was installed worked. We now have sound.
