So, goodbye Google Domains. Google added another product to the constantly ongoing killedbygoogle.com list.
Short story time: Last Monday, I got an email from Squarespace (they purchased the domain customers from Google). It's time to activate the account. No big deal - I got it and quickly activated it, and managed to log in. The DNS looks rather Spartan (in particular, lacking Dynamic DNS) but functional. Also, the renewal price is the same as before, $12 per year. So far, so good.
Literally, the next day I get an email about my next renewal at the end of May this year, the price will go up by 25% !! (Yes, $12 to $15 per year isn't going to bankrupt me, but it's a matter of principle). I did a bit of research online, and according to many, Squarespace has a terrible reputation, especially for its abusive customer service. Since this domain and this blog aren't profitable anymore, I have to minimize my costs, so I started looking for better/cheaper alternatives, and I've found PorkBun.
Fun fact: Squarespace purposefully delays domain transfers by 3 days.
Porkbun is cheaper. Allows both DNSSec and API access. Dynamic DNS isn't directly available, but easily doable with an API call - here's ready Powershell code:
Allows bulk DNS export and import (unlike Squarespace) and generally seems far more functional.
Did I forget to mention that it's cheaper, too? Only $11.06 for this dot-COM domain, including DNS.
p.s: Don't forget to update NS servers too.
